The New Bird on the South African Gin Scene
Soon to be seen in the hands of crafty gin drinkers as often you see Guinea fowl in Cape Town gardens. Ginny Fowl Gin is here to stay!
That’s because Ginny Fowl Gin has been uniquely crafted so that it can be enjoyed all the time, even with meals. Learn more about Ginny Fowl’s audacious story and food-driven profiles.
The Evolution Of Gin
What sets Ginny Fowl Gin apart is that it’s not trying to be like any other gin. Master gin-maker Shane Douglas-Evans specifically created Ginny Fowl so that Gin lovers everywhere could finally pair their favourite beverage with their meal.
“To give gin drinkers the choice of not having to switch to wine, but rather enjoy their gin with complimentary food flavours.” —Shane Douglas-Evans
Shane has a long and rich history with food preparation, having spent almost all of her adult life in food and beverage within the hospitality industry. Over the years, Shane developed a sophisticated pallet and chose to apply this talent to crafting gin flavours that no-one else had.
Ginny Fowl marries food-driven flavours with the dominant Juniper smell and taste to create an exceptional gin-drinking experience.
Behind the name, Ginny Fowl
So what does all this brewing, distilling and gastronomy have to do with the humble Guinea Fowl? It’s a punny story…
From what we hear, at least. The full story is yet to be released, but judging from what they mention on their website, Ginny was a humorous autocorrect fail. It seems “Gin” was corrected to “Guinea”, which sparked the splice and Ginny was born.
Hand-Crafted, Artisanal Methodology
Ginny Fowl gins are produced using what is known as the cold infusion ‘Bathtub’ method. This is a traditional method that preserves the subtlety of the botanicals in a way that heat does not. Shane believes that it creates a gin of higher integrity, and we agree.
The judges agree too – as can be seen by the awards Ginny Fowl has managed to collect in seemingly no time at all.
International Craft Spirit Innovative Trophy, Double Gold and Gold winner, Michelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards, 2018.
Meet the Flock
To date, there are five wonderful Ginny Fowl flavours to choose from, two of which are available right here at Hamper World.
Classic Distilled London Dry Gin
Also known as the resurrection gin, referencing the resurrection herb that it features. The resurrection bush is found in the Kalahari in Botswana. The bush appears to be “dead”, resembling dried-out brownish-red sticks. When the rains come, the bush becomes green, often flowering, and is said to have been resurrected.
This is a perfect everyday drinking gin created for the purist. It has smooth notes of orange, cardamom, rosemary and fennel.
Winner of the Michelangelo Double Gold Medal 2018.
The Ginny Fowl Classic Distilled London Dry is so versatile it can be paired with any number of tonics and mixers, snacks and meals.
This is where gin-lovers can revel in the true spirit of gin! The sipping gin was created to be enjoyed on ice with no mixers, much like a whisky.
With Black sesame and cacao, it is an incredibly warming, soothing, amber gin with notes of nuttiness, chocolate and a hint of orange.
Winner of the Michelangelo Most Innovative Craft Spirit Trophy 2018.
