Botanically Brewed, Exquisitely Crafted
100 Year Legacy
You simply can’t improve on perfection, which is why Fentimans have not altered their recipe or brewing techniques since they began in 1905.
Thomas Fentiman acquired the recipe for botanically brewed ginger beer as security for a loan by a fellow tradesman (Thomas was an iron puddler at the time). When the loan was not repaid, Thomas took ownership of the recipe. He began by delivering his brew door-to-door, and popularity grew fast.
One could say that Fentimans was an overnight success. Within a few short years, Fentimans had opened several brewing and production facilities throughout North England. However, the advents of mass production and supermarket chains almost left these masters of brewing in the history books.
Until Thomas’ great-grandson stepped in to take over the family business. A few subtle tweaks to the production process—such as carbonising before bottling and extra pasteurisation to extend shelf life—and Fentimans is now widely available throughout the world.
They still make their delicious natural beverages with their signature multi-stage botanical brewing technique and their glass bottles still adorn the image of the family dog “Fearless” as loyal followers have come to recognise.
About botanical brewing | All-natural infusion, blending and fermentation
Fentimans use the time honoured traditional technique of botanical brewing. It comprises several stages using only the purest, quality all-natural herb, root and flower extracts to create drinks with a flavour, aroma, and texture profile second to none.
The main ingredients (plant roots and herbs) are crushed and mulled before being placed copper steam pans with spring water and gently heated until simmering. This process induces the extraction of fine sediment and releases maximum flavour from the botanicals.
The botanical liquid is filtered into a wooden vat. Herbs, natural flavouring, sugar and brewer’s yeast are added. The liquid is left overnight, after which the yeast crust is removed. Then it left to further ferment in the vat. The liquid is decanted, carbonated, pasteurised and bottled.
Following this process produces “a depth of flavour, smooth texture and rich aroma” that is synonymous with Fentimans fine botanical brews. To this day, they are the only brewer the uses this method, and so other “me too” brands simply cannot mimic their unique taste, try as they may.
